Current Trail Conditions:    Portions of the OT Trail CLOSED along the west side of the loop until further notice.

Please STAY ON TRAIL during spring conditions. Failure to do so creates social trails and damages the natural vegetation under the snow.

For Natural Resources events and activities, check out the Events Calendar!

Fishing access downstream of the bridge is CLOSED. A seasonal wildlife closure is in effect to protect nesting Golden Eagles. River access below the bridge is closed until eaglets have fledged, normally mid-July.

If extremely muddy conditions exist, these trails may be closed to protect them from damage. Such closures will be posted on this site, on open space road signs, at trailheads and a Facebook and Twitter update will be sent out. Otherwise, please stay on trail and do not go around muddy spots. If people go around muddy areas, the trail widens and vegetation is trampled. A widened trail is very difficult and expensive to restore. Thank you for helping to keep your open spaces beautiful!

Parts of both trail loops incorporate old ranch roads. Other portions of these ranch roads are not part of the trail system. Watch for the trail directional markers with the "3-Bar" and “OT” trail symbols on them, and please don't go on the roads with “NO PUBLIC ACCESS” signs.

Weather conditions can change rapidly in backcountry areas.  Dress in layers, carry extra clothing, and be prepared for cold, wet and stormy weather.

Mule deer, elk, coyotes, bobcats, and sometimes bears can be seen. An occasional bighorn sheep has been seen passing through the open space.

Raptor/bird sightings
Nearly every day you will see the resident Red-tailed Hawks, Prairie Falcons, Golden Eagles and occassionaly a Bald Eagle hunting for rodents, rabbits and fish.

Fishing is permitted upstream from the bridge to the private property line to the north and west. There is private property north and south of Eagle’s Nest Open Space. Please honor the “NO TRESPASSING” signs. Remember, a valid fishing license is required, and we recommend using only artificial lures and to practice "catch and release."

During the big game season, archery and muzzleloader hunting is allowed on weekdays only at Eagle's Nest Open Space. You must possess a valid Colorado Parks and Wildlife hunting license for the archery or muzzleloading season.

Hunters are also allowed to access the U.S. Forest Service land adjacent to Eagle's Nest via the Eagle's Nest trails. Rifle hunters must have their firearms unloaded while passing through the Eagle's Nest Open Space. It is your responsibility to know the boundaries between public and private land. A good map and GPS is recommended as part of your hunt.  Rifle hunting and small game hunting is not allowed on Eagle's Nest Open Space. Overnight parking is not allowed.

Regulation brochures are available at the trailhead.

See the Parks and Open Lands event calendar.
