For Immediate Release:

LOVELAND, Colo. – The next Larimer County Open Lands Advisory Board (Board) meeting is Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Loveland Council Chambers, 500 E. 3rd St., Loveland.

At this month’s meeting, the Board will take action on a 358.84 acre fee simple purchase of the Sanem property, which abuts the western flank of Horsetooth Rock and shares a common boundary of approximately 1.5 miles with Horsetooth Mountain Open Space (HTMOS), near Lory State Park. The transaction will encompass two areas. Both areas consist of rolling foothills, rock outcroppings, ridgelines, and forested hillsides. Redstone Creek, which flows north/south through a portion of the property for approximately 4,000 feet, contains Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse habitat. The property also provides an east/west migration corridor for large mammals including mule deer, black bear, mountain lion and bobcat while also providing good habitat for turkey and grouse.  Views overlook portions of HTMOS, as well as providing views of Wyoming, Fort Collins, Loveland and Horsetooth Reservoir.

Wildlife habitat and the elimination of potential fragmentation of the landscape through 35 acre development are important features of this land conservation effort, which will also ensure that westerly views from atop Horsetooth Rock will remain as they are today, without additional roof tops.

This project consists of a partnership between Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), the City of Fort Collins, and Larimer County. Through a competitive grant process, GOCO awarded $1 million of funding toward this purchase and in order to protect the property in perpetuity, a third party conservation easement will be placed on the entire property and will be held by the City of Fort Collins.  Fort Collins intends to contribute $750,000 toward the purchase, with Larimer County adding the final $760,000 from the Help Preserve Open Spaces sales tax.

The Board will also receive and discuss updates on the Stegner Farm Project and on an upcoming visitor use study.

All meetings are open to the public. For additional information, contact Kerri Rollins, Open Lands Program Manager, at (970) 619-4577.
