Larimer County’s vast array of nearby parks and open spaces offer many options to get outdoors and stay physically active. Celebrate these areas and County Government Month in April, “Healthy Counties, Healthy Families,” by taking a short, easy hike with a County Commissioner.
Saturday, April 14, 2012, 2 to 4 p.m.: Join District 3 County Commissioner Tom Donnelly at Devil’s Backbone Open Space, just west of Loveland.
Saturday, April 21, 2012, 2 to 4 p.m.: Join District 1 County Commissioner Lew Gaiter III at Eagle's Nest Open Space, just south of Livermore.
Saturday, April 28, 2012, 2 to 4 p.m.: Join District 2 County Commissioner Steve Johnson at Soderberg Open Space, off Shoreline Drive across from Inlet Bay at Horsetooth Reservoir.
As a whole, Larimer County Government has shown its support for health in other ways, as well, specifically with its comprehensive employee wellness program called Body And Mind (BAM) and its employer-sponsored health clinic. Larimer County received a Gold Well Workplace designation from the Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) in March, 2011, for these and other wellness initiatives. Just like “Healthy Counties and Healthy Families” go hand in hand, the County recognizes the tie between healthy employees and a productive workforce.
The Larimer County Health Department, which celebrates Public Health Week April 2 – 8, endorses the Commissioner Walks as healthy and fun activities to jumpstart a season of physical activity. The benefits of even mild, but regular exercise are many and include the strengthening of bones and joints, improved heart health, lower blood pressure, and clearer thinking. Outdoor exercise helps expose the body to sunlight and Vitamin D, increasing the body’s absorption of this vital substance for improved bone, joint, and heart health. Outdoor “play” can help you lose weight and get into better physical shape. Being immersed in natural surroundings can help boost your mood and self esteem while also lowering stress, blood pressure and muscle tension.
