*Crude Death Rate
Data Source: Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
What the above data tell us:
National data from 2009 show the top three causes of death in males were heart disease (307,225 deaths), cancer (296,763), and accidents (75,022). These were also the top three causes of death in 2010 for males in Larimer County and Colorado. Male mortality rates for the leading causes of death in Larimer County exceeded rates for Colorado for three of the ten leading causes of death shown above (stroke, suicide, and other respiratory diseases). For more information on gender and mortality visit the Mortality page on COMPASS.Suicide in Colorado in 2011 was most common in white males between the ages of 45 and 54 (152), followed by white males between the ages of 35 and 44 (124). For more information, visit the Suicide page on COMPASS.

What the above data tell us:
The incidence of prostate cancer cases in Larimer County increased more than 37% from 2000 to 2008 before dropping over 35% between 2008 and 2009.
From 2002 to 2011, the number of men in Larimer County who died from prostate cancer ranged from a low of 15 (2005) to a high of 35 (2011). Care should be taken in analyzing this data for trends due to the small sample size. In 8 of the last 10 years, Larimer County met the Healthy People objective. See Additional Information for an explanation of the Healthy People initiative.
Nationally, both incidence and mortality rates for prostate cancer have declined. The National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2012 approximately 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and 28,170 men will die of the disease.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in males and is the third leading cause of cancer-related death (next to lung and colorectal cancers among males) in Larimer County. (See Cancer Incidence & Mortality for more information.)
Additional Information:
Healthy People 2010 was a national health promotion and disease prevention initiative establishing national objectives to improve the health of all Americans, to eliminate disparities, and to increase the years and quality of life.
New guidelines and objectives have been established for the next ten years, through 2020.
